Sales Tax & GST Calculator.

Add tax to a price or pull the tax back out of a tax-inclusive total. Presets for the Indian GST slabs and any custom sales-tax or VAT rate.

Gross

Both Directions

Most tax calculators only add tax on top of a price. This one also works in reverse — give it a tax-inclusive total and it recovers the original net price and the exact tax portion, which is what you need for invoices, expense claims, and bookkeeping.

One Tool, Every Rate

GST slabs, US state sales tax, or European VAT all use the same percentage arithmetic. The preset chips cover the common Indian GST rates; the rate field accepts anything, so a 7.25% California rate or a 20% UK VAT rate works just as easily.

Knowledge Base

Adding and Removing Tax, Explained Methodology.

Consumption taxes — sales tax, GST, and VAT — are all a percentage of a price. The only thing that trips people up is direction: whether the number they have already includes tax or not. Getting that right is the difference between an invoice that balances and one that does not.

The Calculation Branch

Add Tax: Tax = Price × Rate% ; Total = Price + Tax | Remove Tax: Net = Total ÷ (1 + Rate%) ; Tax = Total − Net

Industrial Standards.

The calculator has two modes. In Add Tax mode, your amount is treated as the pre-tax (net) price and tax is added on top. In Remove Tax mode, your amount is treated as the final (gross) price that already contains tax, and the tool works backwards to separate the net price from the tax. The three result tiles always show net, tax, and gross so you can read whichever figure you need.

In-Depth Analysis & Reference Data

A common and costly mistake is applying the rate to the wrong base. If a ₹1,180 receipt already includes 18% GST, the tax is not 1,180 × 18% = ₹212.40 — that would be taxing the tax. The correct tax is 1,180 − (1,180 ÷ 1.18) = ₹180. This reverse calculation matters most for businesses reclaiming input tax and for anyone splitting a tax-inclusive bill, which is exactly what Remove Tax mode handles.

Registry Questions & FAQ.

Can I calculate tax on a discounted price?

Yes — tax is almost always applied to the price actually paid, so calculate the discount first, then enter the discounted price here and add tax. Order matters: a 10% discount followed by 18% tax gives a different total than tax followed by discount, and virtually all jurisdictions tax the post-discount amount.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

Under Indian GST, an 18% rate on an in-state sale is split into 9% CGST (central) and 9% SGST (state); on an inter-state sale the same 18% is charged as a single IGST. The total tax you pay is the same either way, so for a price calculation you simply enter the combined rate — 18% — and this tool gives the correct tax and total.
