Compound discounts (stacked percentage discounts) do not add together. A 20% off followed by an additional 10% off is not 30% off — it is 28% off. The calculation: $100 → 20% off = $80 → 10% off $80 = $72. To model stacked discounts, apply this calculator twice: first for the initial discount, then use the result as the new original price.

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 - discount%). If something costs $60 after a 25% discount: $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 original price. What is a good discount percentage?

Retail studies show that discounts below 10% are often barely noticed by consumers. Discounts of 20–30% are seen as genuinely meaningful. Above 50% triggers skepticism about original price inflation. For genuine clearance, 40–70% discounts are typical. For everyday sales, 15–25% is the sweet spot for perceived value.
