Area Formulas

Every straight-sided area formula is a variation on base times height. A rectangle uses it directly, a triangle is half of one, and a trapezoid averages its two parallel sides to get an effective base.

Rectangle: A = l × w
Triangle: A = ½ × b × h
Circle: A = πr²
Trapezoid: A = ½ × (a + b) × h
Parallelogram: A = b × h
Ellipse: A = π × a × b

The height in the triangle, trapezoid, and parallelogram formulas is always the perpendicular distance between the base and the opposite vertex or side — never the length of a sloping edge. Using a slanted side instead of the true height is the most common source of a wrong answer, and it always overestimates the area.

Converting Area Units

Area conversion factors are the square of the length factors, which trips people up regularly. A yard is 3 feet, but a square yard is 9 square feet, not 3.

Because one metre is 3.28084 feet, and 3.28084 squared is 10.7639. To go from square feet to square metres, divide by the same number.

Carpet and turf are commonly priced per square yard in the US and per square metre elsewhere. Convert before comparing quotes or the cheaper-looking option may not be.

A hectare is 10,000 square metres, roughly 2.471 acres. Both are area units defined without reference to any particular shape.

Measuring Irregular Spaces

Real rooms, gardens, and plots rarely match a textbook shape. The standard approach is decomposition: split the space into rectangles and triangles, calculate each separately, and add the results. Subtract rather than add for cut-outs such as a chimney breast or a pond.

For flooring, paint, and turf, add a waste allowance on top of the calculated area — typically 5% for a simple rectangular room and 10-15% where there are diagonal cuts, patterned material that needs matching, or many obstacles. The area calculation gives you the true surface; the allowance covers what gets trimmed off and thrown away.

Area measures the surface a shape covers and is always expressed in squared units; perimeter measures the distance around its edge and stays in linear units. Both come straight from the shape's dimensions, and the only real difficulty is measuring the right dimension in the first place.

Industrial Standards.

Areas use the standard Euclidean formulas with π taken to full double precision. The ellipse perimeter uses Ramanujan's second approximation, π[3(a + b) − √((3a + b)(a + 3b))], which is accurate to better than one part in ten million for ordinary shapes because no closed-form expression for an ellipse perimeter exists. Perimeters for the triangle, trapezoid, and parallelogram require the sloping sides, which are entered separately since they cannot be derived from the area inputs alone.

Doubling the linear dimensions of any shape quadruples its area, because both dimensions grow. That relationship explains why a 14-inch pizza is not slightly bigger than a 10-inch one but very nearly twice the food, and why a room 20% larger in each direction needs 44% more flooring.

The circle is the most area-efficient shape for a given perimeter — it encloses more space per unit of boundary than any polygon. That is why pipes, tanks, and cells are round: for a fixed amount of wall material, a circular cross-section carries the most volume.

Registry Questions & FAQ.

I only know the diameter of my circle. What do I enter?

Halve it. The radius is half the diameter, so a 12-foot circular patio has a radius of 6 feet and an area of about 113 square feet.

Why does the trapezoid perimeter need an extra number?

The area only needs the two parallel sides and the height between them, but the perimeter needs the lengths of the sloping sides, which the height does not determine on its own. Enter the sloping side and the perimeter is calculated as a + b + 2c, which assumes the trapezoid is isosceles. For an uneven trapezoid, add the two sloping sides yourself.
